Edit or delete contacts

In February 2021, Google announced it would be phasing out the unlimited and free storage allocation previously available to schools and universities that use Google Drive. Instead, it will offer a base amount of storage for a fixed fee and a charge for additional storage. An initiative is underway to support the university’s transformation to a new Google service.

You can edit or delete contacts directly within your Gmail interface. Here’s a guide for both desktop and Android devices:

On Desktop:

Edit a Contact:

  1. Go to https://contacts.google.com/.
  2. Point to a contact’s name. A menu with icons will appear on the right side.
  3. Click the pencil icon to edit the contact information.
  4. Edit the details like name, phone number, email address, or add additional information.
  5. Click Save when finished.

Delete a Contact:

  1. Go to https://contacts.google.com/.
  2. Select one or more contacts you want to delete. You can check the boxes next to their names.
  3. Click the Down arrow icon in the top left corner (it displays a menu when clicked).
  4. Select Delete.
  5. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Click Delete again to confirm.

Important Note: Deleted contacts are moved to the Trash folder and remain there for 30 days. After 30 days, they are permanently deleted.

On Android:

Edit a Contact:

  1. Open the Gmail app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner.
  3. Select Contacts from the menu options.
  4. Search or browse to find the contact you want to edit.
  5. Once you’ve found the contact, tap on their name to open their details.
  6. Tap the Edit button (usually a pencil icon).
  7. Edit the contact information as needed.
  8. Tap Save when finished.

Delete a Contact:

  1. Open the Gmail app on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left corner.
  3. Select Contacts from the menu options.
  4. Search or browse to find the contact you want to delete.
  5. Tap and hold on the contact’s name to select it.
  6. A menu bar will appear at the top. Tap the Trash can icon.
  7. A confirmation pop-up will appear. Tap Delete to confirm.

Similar to the desktop version, deleted contacts on Android are moved to the Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion.

By following these steps, you can easily manage your contacts in Gmail, keeping your contact information up-to-date and your address book organized.
